I decided on Monday to take part of the day off from Karlton-duty. I went for a drive on the Otago peninsula. It was a great day for it too, with beautiful weather. I stopped into a couple of shops as well as at the beach at which my parents had seen the yellow-eyed penguin. Though it was too early in the day to see penguins when I was there, the scenery was fantastic.
It was time for Karlton’s acupuncture appointment by the time I reached ISIS. He was still eating lunch and was in no hurry to leave. He was in a foul mood as well, though he wouldn’t tell me why. I suspect that it might have been at least partly because he changed rooms that morning. He now shares a four-bed room (though one bed is currently vacant).
Luckily, the acupuncture seemed to help his mood. During the appointment, Karlton told me that he had done shoulder exercises in physio. He didn’t end up having a speech therapy session though, and he was a little bitter at having written the essay, only to not have to turn it in yet. Helen (reflexologist) and Jacky (massage therapist) had also stopped by earlier that day and given him treatments. He seemed appreciate the massage and work that they performed on him.
We returned to the ward to find Nina and Sam waiting to see Karlton. He ate his dinner while he visited them. Sam had bought a pack of Skittles and added matching ones to Karlton’s food (i.e. he put a red Skittle in the kidney beans, a green one in the peas, a yellow in the squash, etc.). That was quite entertaining, especially seeing Karlton’s face when he spooned some beans into his mouth, not seeing the Skittle.
Karlton really likes having visitors, and he was quite happy to make a lunch date with Nina and Sam for Thursday. After hanging out with them for awhile, we tried to get his new space in some order.
While Karlton was getting ready for bed, one of his roommates, who had been sleeping, awoke, quite disoriented. He thought it was morning, and was making a racket. Karlton was somewhat annoyed by this, but he’ll have to adjust to interacting with people a little bit more. He sent me a text message that night saying that the other roommate was ‘snoring up a storm.’ It’s an adjustment for Karlton to be in this new room; I hope he settles in quickly.
